Before VEL

The Traditional Service Plan

Before VEL, support coordinators followed a checklist of standard questions, trying to create goals that often sounded the same for everyone. Plans focused on fixing deficits instead of celebrating strengths — leaving people’s real aspirations out of the picture.

Common Issues:

  • Generic goals not tied to the person’s life or interests

  • “Total assistance” language that discouraged independence

  • No measurable steps or outcomes

  • Plans stored away, rarely revisited or updated

Example Goals:

  • Drink more water

  • Eat healthier

  • Exercise regularly

  • Go on outings

“There were no measurable outcomes to say when I have fulfilled my goals.”
— Sarah Jones

After VEL

An Empowered Vision

With VEL, Sarah’s plan was transformed into a living, person-centered roadmap.
Her goals became measurable, her supports actionable, and her vision clearly defined.

Example SMART Goals:

  • Attend at least two local art events to reconnect with her artist community.

  • Explore three new healthy recipes each week to support her wellness goals.

  • Research and test home access solutions, like key fobs or smart locks, for greater independence.

DSP Teaching Strategies:

  • Assist with event research and transportation planning.

  • Role-play social interactions before community events.

  • Support weekly meal prep and recipe selection.

Technology Recommendations:

  • Smart locks for easier home access

  • Communication aids and creative design software

  • Apps for healthy meal planning and art event discovery

“Not only does it give me more personal goals, but it also laid out specific ways DSPs can assist me.”
— Sarah Jones
